Japanese Tatto Style Designs

Japanese tattoo style is probably one of the most influential styles on modern tattoos and has a very long history. Tattoos in Japan extend back to the Yayoi period (around 300 BC - 300 AD) tattoos have a spiritual meaning and they also serve as status symbols. In the Kofun period (300-600 AD), they begin to be used as a sign for criminals, therefore with negative connotations.

We should also mention Ainu, a native of Japan, they used to have tattoos on their arms, mouths and sometimes their foreheads. They have lived in Japan for thousands of years and they have also integrated with more modern civilization; no doubt they have somehow affected the art of Japanese tattoos. Although, what really affects the Japanese tattoo style are the floating world pictures (called ukiyo-e in Japanese) which are basically wooden block prints.
